The economics of home security cameras have inverted. Hardware has become inexpensive, and the recurring fee attached to it has become the larger number over any reasonable ownership period. A camera bought for a modest one time price can carry a monthly charge that exceeds its purchase price within a year or two.
This has become the defining consumer question in the category, and manufacturers have noticed. A growing share of products are being marketed on the basis of local storage and on device processing, with no required subscription.
Where the Money Goes
Per camera cloud plans are commonly priced in the range of a few dollars to around ten dollars per camera per month, with multi camera plans usually offering better per unit value. Outfitting a whole house on a per camera plan can run into the hundreds of dollars per year.
What the subscription typically buys:
- Cloud video storage, usually for a defined retention window
- Smarter detection features, such as distinguishing people, vehicles, animals, and packages
- Video history search
- Extended warranty or support in some cases
- Professional monitoring, where offered, which is a different service again
What it does not necessarily buy is live viewing, which many systems provide without a plan, or basic motion alerts.
Local Storage as the Alternative
Systems that record to a local device, whether a memory card in the camera or a recorder in the house, avoid the recurring fee. The tradeoffs are real:
- If the camera or recorder is stolen or destroyed, the footage may go with it
- Remote access depends on the manufacturer's app and your home internet connection
- Feature sets vary, though on device processing has closed much of the detection gap
- You are responsible for storage capacity and retention
A hybrid arrangement, with local recording as the primary and a small cloud plan for critical cameras, is a reasonable middle path.
Professional Monitoring Is a Separate Decision
It is easy to conflate camera subscriptions with alarm monitoring. They are different products.
Professional monitoring means a monitoring centre receives alarm signals and can dispatch responders. It typically costs somewhere in the region of twenty to sixty dollars per month, varying by provider and package. Self monitoring means alerts go to your phone and the response depends on you.
The distinction matters for insurance. Carriers that offer a protective device discount usually require professional monitoring and documentation of it. Reported discounts vary widely and are frequently in the low single digit percentages, with some carriers offering more for comprehensive smart home packages. Self monitored systems generally do not qualify. If a discount is part of your reasoning, confirm the specific requirement with your carrier before buying, since the rules differ.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Buy
- What works without a subscription, and what stops working?
- How long is video retained on the plan, and what happens to it if I cancel?
- Is there local storage as a fallback, and how much?
- Does the camera need a hub or bridge, and is that included?
- What happens during an internet or power outage?
- Is the system cellular backed up, and is that an additional fee?
- Can I move the equipment if I sell the house, or is it leased?
That last question catches people out with bundled security packages, where the equipment may be financed or leased over a term with early termination charges.
Contract Terms Deserve a Read
Monitored security has a long history of multi year agreements with automatic renewal. Before signing, check the term length, the renewal terms, the price after any promotional period, the cancellation process, and whether equipment is owned or leased.
