Every autumn, windows start fogging and homeowners start getting replacement quotes. Sometimes that is the right response. Often it is not, because condensation on a window is usually reporting on the air in the room rather than on the window itself.
Where the moisture appears tells you which problem you have.
Condensation on the Inside
Moisture on the room side of the glass means indoor humidity is high enough that the air condenses when it touches the coldest surface in the room. The window is that surface. It is the messenger.
This is normal in moderation, particularly on a cold morning or in a kitchen or bathroom during use. It becomes a problem when it is persistent, when it pools on the sill, or when you see it on windows throughout the house.
Common sources of the humidity:
- Cooking, showering, and laundry without adequate exhaust ventilation
- Bathroom fans that are undersized, vented into the attic instead of outdoors, or simply not used long enough
- A humidifier running at a setting appropriate for milder weather
- An unvented or damp crawl space or basement, which pushes moisture up into the house
- A tighter house after air sealing or new windows, which reduces the incidental ventilation that used to carry moisture away
- Firewood, aquariums, many houseplants, or a large household relative to the ventilation
The fixes are mostly cheap. Run exhaust fans during and for a while after showers and cooking. Confirm the bath fan actually terminates outdoors, which is worth checking in the attic because vents terminating inside the attic are common and cause more damage than the condensation. Lower humidifier settings as outdoor temperature drops. Address crawl space moisture. Improve ventilation.
If you have persistent interior condensation and you also have new windows, this often means the house got tighter and the ventilation did not keep up. That is a ventilation project, not a window defect.
Condensation on the Outside
Dew on the exterior glass, typically on a clear morning in spring or autumn, means the glass surface is colder than the outdoor dew point. That happens when the glass is doing its job, holding indoor heat inside rather than letting it warm the outer pane.
This is not a defect. It tends to appear on newer, better performing windows and it usually burns off within an hour or two. It is inconvenient and it is not a reason to call anybody.
Condensation Between the Panes
This one is a window problem. Fog, haze, or visible moisture sealed between the panes of an insulated glass unit means the perimeter seal has failed. The insulating gas has escaped, humid air has entered, and it is condensing where you cannot wipe it.
Symptoms include persistent haze that does not clear, mineral streaking on the interior glass surfaces over time, and a noticeable difference in comfort near that window.
A failed seal reduces the thermal performance of that unit, though the window still functions as a window. It is not an emergency, and it is worth addressing on your schedule rather than on a salesperson's.
Options for a Failed Seal
Replace the glass unit only. In many windows the insulated glass unit can be replaced while keeping the existing frame and sash. This is generally far less expensive than replacing the window and it is a genuine option that does not always get offered. Ask about it specifically.
Check the warranty first. Insulated glass units commonly carry a warranty measured in years or decades, and seal failure is exactly what it covers. You will usually need the manufacturer, the approximate installation date, and any identifying stamp etched in a corner of the glass. Defogging services drill the unit, clean it, and add a vent. Opinions in the trade vary on durability, and the original insulating gas fill is not restored. Ask what is warranted and for how long.

What This Means for Replacement Quotes
Autumn is when window salespeople see condensation and homeowners see a problem. If you are quoted a whole house replacement on the basis of interior fogging, ask the salesperson to explain how new windows fix indoor humidity. The honest answer is that they mostly do not, and they can make it more noticeable by tightening the house.
If seals have genuinely failed on multiple units in a house of a certain age, whole house replacement may be reasonable on its own merits.
