Gutters get attention when they overflow, and the assumption is almost always that they are clogged. Sometimes they are. Often the system simply cannot move the volume of water arriving in a heavy rain, and cleaning it will not change that.
Sizing is the part of a gutter quote that nobody discusses and that determines whether the system works. It is worth understanding before you accept a like for like replacement of something that was undersized to begin with.
What Determines the Size You Need
Gutter capacity is a function of three things: the roof area draining into a given run, the pitch of that roof, and the rainfall intensity your area sees. A steep roof delivers water to the gutter faster than a shallow one, which effectively increases the area it behaves like. A region with intense short duration storms needs more capacity than one with the same annual rainfall spread out.
The consequence is that the same house needs different gutters in different parts of the country, and that two runs on the same house can need different sizes if one collects a valley that drains several planes into one place.
Profiles and Sizes
K-style is the common profile on most American homes, with a flat back and a decorative front face. It holds more water than a half round of the same nominal size.
Half round is a semicircular trough, traditional in appearance, common on older and higher end homes, and lower in capacity for a given size.
Box gutters are larger rectangular sections used on commercial buildings and some residential designs with heavy runoff.
Five inch is the standard residential size and covers a large share of houses. Six inch increases capacity substantially, commonly cited as roughly forty to seventy percent more water carried per foot, and is worth considering when:
- The roof is steep or large
- A valley concentrates multiple roof planes into one run
- Your region sees intense downpours
- Downspouts are widely spaced or awkwardly located
- The fascia board is tall enough that a five inch gutter looks undersized against it
The cost difference between five and six inch on a whole house is real but usually modest relative to the total job. If overflow has been a recurring problem, it is the first thing to raise.
Downspouts Are the Bottleneck
This is the part most homeowners never think about and the part that most often explains poor performance. A large gutter feeding an inadequate downspout is a large gutter that overflows.
Two sizes dominate: a smaller rectangular downspout and a larger one. The larger carries substantially more water and clogs less readily, and many installers now recommend it as standard even on five inch gutters.
Spacing matters as much as size. A common guideline is one downspout for every twenty five to thirty five feet of gutter run, with additional ones at corners and wherever a valley dumps into a single point. Long runs with a downspout at only one end are a frequent cause of overflow at the far end, and adding a second outlet is often cheaper and more effective than upsizing the whole system.
When you get quotes, ask how many downspouts are included and where they will go. A quote that adds one over the existing count is telling you something the previous installer got wrong.
Materials
Aluminum is the default and accounts for most residential installations. It does not rust, is light, comes in many colors, and is formed on site into seamless runs. Thickness varies between installers and matters, since thinner stock dents more readily from ladders and ice.
Steel is stronger than aluminum and handles ladder loads and falling branches better. Galvanized steel rusts once the coating is compromised. Stainless steel does not and is expensive, and is mainly seen in coastal salt air.
Copper lasts a very long time, develops a patina, and is soldered rather than sealed at joints. It is the most expensive common option by a wide margin and is generally an architectural choice.
Vinyl is inexpensive, sold in sections for do it yourself installation, and reasonable on small structures. It becomes brittle in severe cold, sags between hangers over time, and fades in strong sun. It is not usually the right answer on a full house in a demanding climate.
Zinc is a durable specialty material seen on higher end projects.

Seamless Versus Sectional
Seamless gutters are rolled from coil stock on a truck at your house and cut to the exact length of each run, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. Fewer joints means fewer places to leak, and this is the standard for professional installation.
Sectional gutters come in fixed lengths joined together, which is what most home center product is. Every joint is a future leak. For a homeowner installing a short run on a shed, sectional is fine. For a house, seamless is worth the difference.
The Parts That Are Easy to Skip
- Hangers and spacing. Hidden hangers screwed into the fascia hold better than spike and ferrule. Closer spacing matters in snow country, where ice loads are substantial.
- Slope. A gutter needs a slight fall toward the outlet. Too little and water stands, too much and it looks wrong and can overshoot at the low end.
- Fascia condition. A gutter is only as sound as what it is attached to, and rotted fascia is a very common discovery once the old gutter comes off. Ask for a stated repair rate rather than an open ended charge.
- Where the water goes. Discharging next to the foundation is the single most common defect, and extensions or buried drain lines are inexpensive relative to what foundation water costs.
Guards Are a Separate Decision
Gutter guards are frequently bundled into replacement quotes. They reduce cleaning rather than eliminating it, and they do not fix undersizing, slope, or ice dams. Get the system sized correctly first, then decide on guards on their own merits, which we cover in what gutter guards do and do not do.
Getting a Comparable Quote
Ask each company for linear footage, profile and size, material and gauge, hanger type and spacing, number and size of downspouts, where each discharges, and what happens if fascia repair is needed. That turns three different numbers into three comparable ones.
